چکیده

[1] The Constellation Observing System for Meteorology Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC)/Formosa Satellite 3 (FORMOSAT-3) is a six-satellite radio occultation mission that was launched in mid-April, 2006. The close proximity of the COSMIC satellites provides a unique opportunity to estimate the precision of the radio occultation remote sensing technique from closely collocated occultations (<10 km separation of tangent points). The RMS difference of refractivity between 10 and 20 km altitude is less than 0.2%, which is approximately twice better than previous estimates obtained from CHAMP and SAC-C collocated occultations, apparently, due to smaller separation of the occultation pairs and due to parallel occultation planes. In the lower troposphere, the maximal RMS is 0.8% at 2 km altitude and decreases abruptly to 0.2% between 6 and 8 km altitude. The RMS difference of electron density in the ionosphere between 150 and 500 km altitude for collocated occultations is about 10 cm . Citation: Schreiner, W., C. Rocken, S. Sokolovskiy, S. Space Weather Observations by GNSS Radio Occultation: From FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC to FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2

The joint Taiwan-United States FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC (Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate) mission, hereafter called COSMIC, is the first satellite constellation dedicated to remotely sense Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere using a technique called Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (RO). The occultations yield abundant information about neutral at...

Atmospheric Profiling in the Inter-Tropical Ocean Area Based on Neural Network Approach Using GPS Radio Occultations

In this study we have proposed a method based on neural networks to retrieve refractivity, temperature, pressure and humidity profiles by using FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC GPS radio occultation data. To overcome the constraint of an independent knowledge of one atmospheric parameter at each GPS occultation, we trained three neural networks with refractivity profiles as input computed from the geometrical...

Comparison of Different Neural Network Approaches for the Tropospheric Profiling over the Inter-tropical lands Using GPS Radio Occultation Data

In this study different approaches based on multilayer perceptron neural networks are proposed and evaluated with the aim to retrieve tropospheric profiles by using GPS radio occultation data. We employed a data set of 445 occultations covering the land surface within the Tropics, split into desert and vegetation zone. The neural networks were trained with refractivity profiles as input compute...

Precise orbit determination for the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC satellite mission using GPS

The joint Taiwan–US mission FORMOSAT-3/ COSMIC (COSMIC) was launched on April 17, 2006. Each of the six satellites is equipped with two POD antennas. The orbits of the six satellites are determined fromGPSdata using zero-difference carrier-phase measurements by the reduced dynamic and kinematic methods. The effects of satellite center of mass (COM) variation, satellite attitude, GPS antenna pha...

Long-term comparison of the ionospheric F2 layer electron density peak derived from ionosonde data and Formosat-3/COSMIC occultations

Electron density profiles (EDPs) derived from GNSS radio occultation (RO) measurements provide valuable information on the vertical electron density structure of the ionosphere and, among others, allow the extraction of key parameters such as the maximum electron density NmF2 and the corresponding peak height hmF2 of the F2 layer. An efficient electron density retrieval method, developed at the...
